Jerked Around

I've been fairly quiet for awhile. I haven't felt much like writing, basically, because I've been in a holding pattern. After my great interview at the university, I knew I'd have to wait about a month for the other two candidates to fly in and have their turn. Well, it's been about 8 weeks since then, and I STILL haven't heard anything. I emailed the director. Nothing. Finally today, my heart pounding, I called up to ask them point blank -- I'm assuming I'm not hired, could you at least tell me so?

Apparently, not so. After leaving my message on their voicemail, the admin assistant called me back. I had really enjoyed talking to her when I was there, and knew (hoped) she wouldn't jerk me around. She just called me back, all apologies, falling over herself to try and explain.

THEY HAVEN'T MADE A DECISION YET! Wtf??? Keep in mind that I interviewed for this job on March 14th. And even if you allow an additional two weeks for each of the other finalists, that still leaves a good 7-8 weeks to mull it over. This isn't like a high-powered, high-paying job. It's a DECENT job, doing something I'd LOVE to do, but it's hardly the presidency.

Now, to complicate things.... Beau had a phone interview for a teaching job in Missouri earlier this week and they offered him the job on the spot! (because he's awesome). It's a place that is probably a good 190 miles away from the university I interviewed at. A bit of a commute! The high school wants Beau to give him their final decision -- by TOMORROW. Oh hell.

And I think it's very important that he says "yes," because it's not like Biology teaching jobs are falling out of the sky and this is a guaranteed ticket back to Missouri for us (and a fairly decent teacher's salary as well). Knowing my continuous bought of crappy luck, he'll say "yes," and a month from now (the admin assistant said it could be as long as the end of June before they know for sure. Pfff), they'll call up and say, "Congratulations, you got the job!"

*sob*

I tell you, moving..... again. Stab me now. But, this is it. READ. MY. LIPS. This is it! No more moving ever ever ever again. Missouri is where I will be buried!

Well, unless we get the chance to go back to New Zealand. *cough*

Beau is in a complete tizzy. He worries like an old woman, and stresses! He just cannot conceive how we can possibly move -- financially. All we own is the little Honda, but now we have furniture and you know, stuff. It's not like renting a UHaul is as easy or cheap as it used to be, and let's not forget $4/gallon gas. He almost doesn't want to take the job just because he doesn't know how we'll manage to get there.

But hey, it's me! I always find a way. Sure, I'm always broke, but I always get to where I need to be.

And lastly, the thought of diving back into that job market again is a monstrously terrifying thought for me. Selfishly, I had really hoped that THIS time that -I- would be the one who got the great job and Beau would be following me, because every time I move to a new place, it gets harder and harder to get that good job. One bright spot -- Beau's job is just 20 miles from Columbia, a nice, mid-sized city (with a good Thai restaurant!) that is home to the biggest university in the state (and a few smaller ones). Yes, I'm already looking for jobs now.

Here we go again.

When I cleaned out a bunch of stuff from my dad's house early this month, I rented a Penske truck - the rates were cheaper than Uhaul, and they give you unlimited miles. And the truck was actually in good condition. Gas sucked, but not as bad as I would have thought (it was only a 12' truck, though).

For God's sake don't use Budget if you have to rent a truck...that's all I'm saying on that.

Best of luck in your decision making process...once again I feel as if your lives are so similar to Paul's and mine and our move from hell went pretty well all told...except the BUDGET TRUCK, DO NOT USE BUDGET!!!

Good luck! And mega congratulations to Beau :)

Thanks, good advice! I will definitely look into that.

I wonder if they give any kind of moving expenses to teachers...hrm....

I just checked and the nearest place for me to rent a Penske is in Coeur d'Alene, IDAHO!!! Like 180 miles away!

*sob*

I'll figure something out...

Best of luck. I also used Penske when I moved from PA to SC. Cost a fortune, but we had a TON of stuff. I hope all goes well, and congrats to Beau for the new job!! That's fantastic. Things may finally start looking up for you!

When we moved from AA to VA, we used ABF's Upack thing where they drop a semi trailer off in front of your house, you load as much as you need and pay by the linear foot, and then they drop it off outside your new residence (or, in our case, the terminal, since they wouldn't drive on our roads). It didn't cost any more than a large Uhaul, and no gas to pay and a truck driver is doing all the driving. I thought it worked quite well.

Of course, you may not have enough to make that worthwhile, but I believe they also offer a pod type thing for smaller moves.

Thanks! I'll check them out too.

I went to a few sites yesterday to get quotes, and was surprised to learn that a 10" truck from Budget (sorry Jen!) with unlimited mileage, and ONE WAY is only about $565. That's actually not bad!

What I've done in the past is just rent a mini van or enormous SUV from a car rental place like Enterprise, made sure to get some kind of special, and it's worked out okay. Last time I got a mini van for a week for about $250 with unlimited miles. Of course, that was roundtrip though, ugh.

I'll keep looking. We have time.

J. Cullinane said...

Oh, but what I meant to say was that the minivan thing might not work cause now we actually have some furniture.

Okay, Upack is $841 terminal to terminal. Again, not HORRIBLE, but more than the Budget truck. Of course, with the Budget truck we have to buy gas. *wince*

With this one, they have to bring the truck from Billings, MT, which is 340 miles away). Argh! Living out in the boonies!

I'll send you an email in the next couple of days with some information on Budget...I can guarantee that you'll be so sorry if you use them. We picked them cause they were cheapest too, but there is a reason for that!

I have friends who live in and around Columbia/Jefferson City/Fulton and have been there several times. I think it's a nice area and I've been in and around UM there myself because my friends went to, go to, worked and still work there as the case may be. It's been a while, but I hope to go back and visit. Heck, I've driven down to Lake of the Ozarks and up to Mexico *blink* during my stays there and that was okay, too.

When moving in the States, I always used the 'pack the car full and get someone else to drive their car and pack it full, too, if I needed help' approach, so I have no helpful advice there, sorry.

But, best of luck with everything! *hugs*

I really like Columbia too. It has a soft place in my heart for many reasons, one being it was the place that I introduced Beau to Thai food, in a fairly decent restaurant. Good thing he liked it since I make it a couple times a week!

Yesterday as we were cleaning out our storage unit, we marveled at the stuff we've accumulated in about a year and a half. Beau said, "Remember that when we moved here everything we owned fit in the Honda?"

Now we need a truck. But really, that has more to do with the furniture. We haven't really accumulated THAT much more junk. Except for the camping gear....and the BBQ stuff...and some more clothes...and books, of course....and all the new dishes and pots and pans....oh, and another cat, twice as big as the original.

Oh, and Jen!

I did read your blog when you talked about hte Budget nightmare, so I'm scared. But as I've moved a 100,000,000 times, I've used everything from stuffing the Honda (a la Kim), to stuffing a rental SUV, to stuffing a U-Haul, etc. They've all had their hits and misses to them, and the rental trucks are a necessity, but one with varied results. I'm hoping what you're about to tell me though doesn't apply to EVERY Budget truck!
